Public Health England issue Legionella Warning

Public Health England have issued a new warning to businesses that have been closed to control the Coronavirus spread.

The warning focuses on the potential health risk which exists in buildings that have been closed or operating with reduced occupancy. Dormant water systems are likely to suffer bacterial growth, particularly in warmer weather, due to water stagnation from reduced or lack of use. Legionella, which is naturally present in water systems, causes Legionnaire’s disease which is fatal in 10% of cases, is the main threat the warning is concerning.

Particular attention is drawn to businesses such as dental practices, hairdressers, hotels, gyms, sports clubs, and office buildings (especially with shower facilities) however any business that has had building shutdowns or reduced occupancy will need to take action.

A highlight of the advice given by Public Health England is that full and regular flushing of buildings water systems take place and where required a full disinfection.

Based on a unique solution of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) that is stabilised using a proprietary ionic silver-based chemistry, SureClear is a powerful, highly effective, broad spectrum disinfectant that is both stable and safe. Added to and flushed through a water system as a shock disinfectant to fully disinfect or applied to clean water systems in a maintenance dose, SureClear is highly effective at improving water quality without forming any harmful by-products (degrading simply into oxygen and water). SureClear also won Legionella Product of the Year at the 2017 H&V News Indoor Air Quality and Water Safety event.
